How Long Should a Resume Be?

Choose the shortest useful document

There is no universal page limit that works for every applicant. A resume should be long enough to show credible evidence for the role and short enough that the reader can find it quickly. Relevance is a better guide than filling a target number of pages.

For many early-career applicants, one page is enough. People with a longer work history, specialist projects, or leadership evidence may need two pages. Academic, federal, medical, and research applications often follow different conventions.

What to keep

Keep experience that proves the skills, scope, and outcomes relevant to the target role. Give more space to recent and related work, and compress older or less relevant positions into a shorter entry when appropriate.

• Projects that demonstrate important skills missing from employment history.
• Qualifications, certifications, and tools the employer actually needs.
• Metrics and scope that make your contribution easier to judge.

What to remove or reduce

Remove repeated responsibilities, outdated software, generic soft-skill lists, and school-level detail that no longer helps your application. Do not shrink the font until the document is technically one page; editing the content is usually better than making it uncomfortable to read.

If the resume spills onto a second page by only a few lines, tighten repeated wording, reduce unnecessary spacing, and move supporting detail into a concise skills or project section. Preserve readable type and consistent margins.

Tailor the length to the application

The right length can change with the job. A technical role may need room for a focused toolset and architecture evidence; a career-change application may need selected projects that make the new direction clear.
